| 2008 Beijing Olympics will include Qinhuangdao for some of the football. |
| HEBEI IS THE PROVINCE where you will really see the Great Wall of China. There is an inner and outer wall. It's in Hebei that that Great Wall starts, in ShanHaiGuan 山海关 which means 'Where the sea meets the mountain'. |

I'd better be especially careful here as Hebei is now my 'hometown'. But you should ask yourself why I chose to live here. Simple answer is that's a great place; it has everything from wildlife to wilderness, bistroes to beaches and it's just now one-and-a-half hours to Beijing since they gave us the new bullet train. |
| |
BEIDAIHE is a beautiful town and a far-cry from the China one normally sees and a twenty-five minute, 2元 bus journey from Qinhuangdao (take the 34 bus). It is a mecca for the wealthy and the Russians.
For those of you that decide to visit here is a top-travel-tip: The menu you will be presented with is a 'special' menu just for you with prices 60% higher than normal. Look at the diary entry for August 2007 and eat at the restaurant shown there. It's on the central street between the bus station and the beach about 300m down on the left. |
 |
|
Beidaihe and Nandaihe are North and South of the Dai river respectively. Dai is the family name of the person who settled in the place. He (pronounced 'hur' means river).
|
JI FA 'Eco-Park' is a great day out if you are visiting Qinhuangdao / Beidaihe (from QHD take the number 6 bus to Beidaihe train station 2元 and then the number 5 to 'Ji Fa' 1元). Admission is 20元 which includes a 'ride' back-and-to across the river on a flying fox type cable. It's possibly not the best park if you're one of those 'animal-rights' type people but then again, where is?
They have some awsome obstacle courses for humans and I gather that they want to see you fall into the 'drink'. It was a dank and dreary day when we went but I'll take up their challenges next summer when 'cooling down' will be a God-send.
If you're living nearby, then JiFa is the ONLY place you'll be able to buy Brussel's sprouts from. I have my order in for this coming Christmas.

| NANDAIHE is a would-be Beidaihe. The poor cousin. The Morrcombe of Blackpool, the Cannes of Nice. It's a shithole, but they do try hard! They try hard with the prices and the tat they attempt to peddle. |
