Every chinese-english picture you see here, every chinglish saying, every strange and funny Chinese fact are all original; either photographed by me, heard by me or experienced by me*. This is why life in China is so good... I must check the dictionary to see if the Chinese have a word for 'boredom'. I doubt it!
A CHINESE FRIEND: Is a friend indeed. They will look after you regardsless but beware, they appear to be numerous when in fact they are scant. A good Chinese friend will truly mean the world to you.
|
PLASTIC BOTTLES & BEER CANS: People in the West think Chinese isn't 'green'! Rubbish! They recycle all their plastic bottles and beer cans. Why? A 600ml plastic water bottle is worth 1 jiao and a beer can is worth between 2 and 5 jiao (10 jiao=1yuan) depending on which province you are in.
|
CAR HORNS: The tooting of car horns is as common as the hocking of a throat here in China. So much so in fact that people are oblivious to them and ignore them. That is execpt for the sound of a Party / Top-ranking Police car which are both unmarked vehicles though 99.9% of the time they are black in colour. The horn sound is so different and it commands your attention. Honking the horn is now illegal in the city of Shanghai.
|
WOMEN'S PROBLEMS: If you go to a 'Women's hospital' they will never ask you if you are sexually active. The euphemism is 'Are you married?'
|
| CHINESE EDUCATION FACT: It is against the 'rules' for any student to have a girlfriend / boyfriend (prior to university). It is also against the 'law' to play cards or Majong at school as this encourages gambling. |
| |
 |
| 2008 BEIJING OLYMPIC FACT: The five mascots or Friendlies are names BeiBei, JingJing, HuanHuan, YingYing, NiNi in that order. The names in short form, BeiJingHuanYingNi means Beijing Welcomes You |
| |
| SOCIAL FACT: Bottled beer is cheaper than bottled water! |
| |
| ETIQUETTE FACT: It is extremely impolite to start eating until at least four dishes have been placed on the table by the fuwuyuan. Furthermore, if you're hosting a banquet, ordering nine dishes is considered extremely auspicious. |
| |
| CHINA LIFE FACT: PRIVACY.. There is almost no such thing here. If you're in the dentist's chair then expect people other than the dentist to be peering down your throat. Patient - doctor confidentiality? No such thing. At the GP, you'll be examined in an open room full of other patients and they'll report back to their friends on your health. |
 |
'Japanese not welcomed'... Well, you, the Japanese and everyone else is welcome here! |
| ETIQUETTE FACT: Do not insert your chopsticks vertically into your rice while resting or opening that next bottle of beer. It is a no-no in China as they symbolise incense sticks lit for the dead. |
| A 'Reflective Moment' in Dalian by the sign-workers. |
 |
| ETIQUETTE FACT: Do not turn a fish once you've eaten the meat from the upside. The Chinese believe that if you do, the next boat you see will capsize. |
 |
We invented paper so we invented 'copy' |
| SPORTING FACT: Professional football pitches must run north-south. The famous 'Dalian Shide' don't even play in Dalian because of their original ground runs east-west! |
| |
|
CHINESE EDUCATION FACT: Senior High School schooling day starts at 6am. and finishes at 10pm. with a 2-hour break for lunch. SEVEN days-a-week with a 'day off' every second weekend.
